Why Does the Same Yoga Pose Feel Different Every Day

Online Yoga Program

Does this seem like a familiar situation where yesterday your ‘Trikonasana’ (Triangle pose) felt smooth and steady, but today it feels like an argument with your own hamstrings?

You are not isolated - we have all been there. I have been teaching since 2001, and have seen scores of students have similar experiences.

The reason why the same yoga pose can feel different on different days is that our body, breath, sleep, stress levels, and mind are never identical on two days. Once we understand this, and internalise this knowledge we are more peaceful as well as effective while practicing yoga in a studio or with our Online Yoga Program.

Is It Normal for a Pose to Feel Easy One Day and Tough the Next

Yes it is, because a pose is not a fixed exam with a fixed score. Rather, it’s like a conversation between us and our body and this interaction varies all the time. Our muscles can feel tighter or looser, joints stiffer or freer, and our breath shallower or deeper. Think about it- even a seasoned sportsperson does not play every innings the same way, so how can our Forward Fold or Shirshasana be executed in exactly the same way, every time we do it?

Can Last Night's Sleep Impact My Yoga Asana Today

It can. A tired body often feels heavier, less steady and less willing to stretch. Insufficient sleep will surely impact our posture performance. Also, proper sleep and relaxation between two sessions of yoga practice is imperative for muscle recovery and thereby ease of assuming postures. If we are not well rested we may find ourself shaking or toppling out of balancing postures or feel the resistance in the muscles.

As per surveys, approximately 59 to 61% of Indian adults get less than 6 hours of uninterrupted sleep per night, which means if we see our asana sway after a late night, it was probably our sleep, not our skill.

Does Mood Impact Yoga Poses

Quite often, when we are stressed, we unconsciously clench the jaw, hunch the shoulders, or hold the breath. A short, tight breath makes a forward fold feel stubborn and a twist feel cramped.

This is why every Professional in-Person Class or Online Yoga Course blends asanas with pranayama and meditation. Even a few minutes of slow, steady conscious breathing can change our approach to a pose and how smoothly we move into it.

What Factors Make the Same Pose Feel Different

To further clarify, here's a table on everything that can make our Yoga asana feel different -

Yoga

Usually we are aware of which time of day works best for us. The Yoga with Sapna Studio in Gurugram runs both morning and evening sessions, so we can choose the hour that suits our body best although one can train and condition oneself to practice at both times equally easily.

What Should We do If a Yoga Asana Feels Challenging

I would suggest not to force it. We should choose the version that fits our body today; not what we could perhaps do previously or what we aspire to do in the future after putting in lots of practice. Maybe we could have developed an injury, which now does not allow us to go as deep into a posture as we could earlier. If one is practicing on one’s own and we are not confident about choosing the correct versions of asanas, then we can try Online Yoga Classes or book a session at the YogaWithSapna Studio, so that we can find out which variations are best for our needs and skill level.

Conclusion

Progress in yoga is rarely linear. It’s more like a wave, with good days, slow days and surprising days.

Next time a pose feels challenging or unfamiliar, pause and ask, "What is my body telling me today?" Whether one has just started out on one’s yoga journey or one has been practicing for years, if yoga feels more like a puzzle, book your trial Online Yoga Session with us!
