Long before cardiologists had stethoscopes, yogis were already tuning into the rhythm of their hearts, tapping into a mysterious study of the flow of ‘pranic’ currents.
Yogis and sages of the past had a deep knowledge of the meridians in the subtle body of humans, which carry life force or panic energy. They learnt that by redirecting the pranic flow via manipulating one’s thumb and finger tips together in certain ways, one could remove blocked energy as well as push greater energy to certain areas which needed it, thereby healing diseases and improving one’s health.
These various hand formations form ‘Mudras’. These ‘Mudras’ create certain psycho neural locks which redirect internal energy currents in specific ways, which manages to influence areas as vital as our cardiovascular system.
‘Mudras’ for cardiovascular health have been an integral part of yogic practice for centuries, and modern wellness circles are now rediscovering this. Essentially, certain ‘mudras’ are known to support heart health because they calm the nervous system, ease stress on the heart, bolster the natural rhythm of the heartbeat and improve energy flow through the body's subtle channels.
This isn't just folklore dressed up as science; it’s a practice rooted in deep observation, and study of ‘panic nadis/nerves’. This study draws from ancient Indian scriptural knowledge, that has supplied us with wisdom for generations, and which is now finding fresh relevance in a world where heart disease has quietly become one of our biggest silent threats.
What Is Yoga Mudra and How It Works on the Body
Mudras, are particular hand gestures, which are typically formed by touching the fingertips in specific patterns. In yogic philosophy, each finger (and thumb) corresponds to one of the five elements:
Thumb. : Fire Element
Index Finger : Air Element
Middle Finger: Space Element
Ring Finger : Earth Element
Little Finger : Water Element
By connecting certain fingers, practitioners can redirect prana (life force), balance these elements within the body, and return body and mind to a state of health.
One can think of it as acupressure for our energy body rather than for our muscles. ‘Mudras’ can do wonders but we must have a fair knowledge of the various mudras and their effects.
